3. Granite (The Rock)
Today's Give Me Earth blog is going to be on Granite. Granite is a type of rock. This rock is known as an igneous rock. Igneous rocks form when lava cools down. This sounds boring, but trust me, this is an awesome topic!!

Granite is a shiny rock that forms when igneous rocks cool down quite slowly. Igneous rocks are formed from lava, or magma, from inside the Earth. Granite is easy to spot because of it's shiny minerals; the minerals look like diamonds if you look at it closely. Granite is also is named the signature rock of Earth.
Granite is one of the oldest rocks on Earth. The first granite came out when Earth was like venus - volcanoes everywhere! Granite formed when lots of that lava cooled down SLOOOOOOOLY.... This formed very large amounts of granite. Today, granite is all over the world.
Granite (the word) is english, right? WRONG! The name comes from Latin. Granite means granum, which is referred to as coarse grain. Coarse grain is cereal that is not wheat and rice. Granite looks like coarse grains in it's own way. That's one reason why they named it Granite (like granules)!
Granite benchtops look really good.
Granite is made of so many different materials, such as crushed up rock (sometimes) and quartz. These are amazing rocks! Quartz are used in many buildings, even the Taj Mahal has some quartz!
Granite is a plutonic rock- a rock that cools down from lava from real volcanoes again Just to remind you, the first granite came out when Earth was like Venus. Next time you get to hold a piece of granite you can remember that that is from a volcano!
Granite is one of the hardest materials on Earth. There is a scale of hardness called the Mohs scale. It is a 1 to 10 scale. 1 is soft and 10 is hardest. Granite is 8! It is so hard that if you accidently cut on the surface of granite with your kitchen knife, your knife would break and not your granite benchtop!
Granite is really easy to care for. This is because granite is tough, and it will never ever break! (unless a quarry truck runs it over). But don't do that because granite cost $32-75 dollars per square foot.
Granite can handle hot pans and stove tops without any damage! but if you wanted to do that with your cutting board, please make sure that you never do that because it will set the house on fire unless you have a hot pad in reach
When people think of getting a granite benchtop, they think it's only going to come in white black or beige. Granite can be found in all those colours and more! That is including pink, green, blue and others!!!!!
