29. Supernova's

A supernova is a type of explosion that happens when a star turns VERY old. It is very interesting to see it with your naked eye. Supernovas are also really cool to read about in scientific articles if you find one. So check out this blog if you want to find out more.

Supernovas aren't really explosions. Fire needs oxygen to burn and the explosions are bursts of energy going everywhere. Supernovas occur when stars run out of fuel and lose their fight against gravity. They spill everywhere. They die. This is what will happen to our sun one day. But that is in 5 billion years from now, so don't worry.

Supernovas happen when stars run out of hydrogen. This is the fuel of the star that has been powerig that star for so long! But the star has to die at some time. None of the stars that you see in the night sky are going to be there for you look at forever. They have to die at some stage. This is called a supernova. All stars will do this eventually.

Supernovas are very rare to see with the naked eye. The brightest is going to be when the red giant Betelgeuse blows up as a supernova. This is a star that you can see with your naked eye from your backyard. It is going to be in 3 billion years though, so nobody alive today will be able to watch it. What a shame.

The remains of a really big star blowing up is actually called a stellar nursery. Stellar nurseries are where new stars are born. The new stars drag away parts of the clouds and that is called a nebula.

Supernovas are also hard to find in the night sky. There are so many stars and many supernovas are far away and therefore very small. VERY small and far away supernovas can only be seen through a telescope.

Check out space.com and nasa.gov to learn more about supernovas. These are some of the best space websites on the internet!

Until next time, give me space! ✌️
